The Frame of the Month
for May!
Racing History in Recycle Style. Since that first race in 1953, the track has undergone three name changes, four configuration changes and one surface change, from dirt to asphalt. Lights were added in 1991 making RIR the only track to hold all of its major events "under the lights".
The race at Richmond International Raceway is now over and the dust has settled. The winners have departed and the fans are looking forward to September when the Race comes back to town.
A tribute to Richmond racing is this month's frame of the month.
Trying to capture the feeling and history is what recycle style framing is all about.
What we framed;
This is a pair of very different images we assembled in recycle style.
The black white image on top is a 1960 Dementi image of Strawberry Hill Speedway. The speedway was the birthplace for Richmond racing in 1946, when Ted Horn drove a Champ Car to victory on a .5-mile dirt track. 1948 was the year NASCAR was founded and five years later held it’s Grand National at Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds in April 1953.
Speaking of which, the second image is a panorama of RIR during a night race from 2006. The print is from Blakeway panoramas. Combining these images shows how far racing in Richmond has come. Even more changes since 2006 have occurred as an addition has been completed at RIR, allowing for more fans able to enjoy racing in Richmond.
How we framed it;
The main structure of this recycle style treatment is made up of two window frames. The larger one has actually been cut down from an oversized window. We left the hardware on both because they have such great patina.
Other pieces included are two vintage VA license plates (1959 and 1963). An oil funnel and Landau hubcap balance out the design. This piece is actually not quite finished. Our hope is to continue adding a few more unique items to the sculpture, namely a hood ornament, visor mirror and car logos.
Stop by the shop to see this piece in person along with the other recycle style works!
