Shadowboxes can be Magic!
"The floating tie"

This is a shadow boxed collage
called "The Magic Tie". The tie, which
the George Mason players rubbed for luck,
is framed along with a reproduction of the
2006 NCAA Basketball Final Four court,
credentials, book cover and story of the
magic tie, and 2 photos.
The tie is thought to have helped
George Mason's team get as far as they
did in the chance to win the tournament.
They did not win the ultimate title but
did so well a book called "Cinderella"
by Michael Litos, featured the teams
journey that year.
Frames used - Cap - Birch
2nd frame (cut on it's back) Daniela
Walnut with black lip, both from
Turner Associates
- total inner depth created - 3 1/2"
Glazing- TruVue Museum glass outer,
clear 1/8 acrylic inner
Mats - Bain 4101 Navy linen
Bain 998005 tarnished copper
Crescent 1577 black face paper on
FC for lining the sides of the frames
There are actually 2 layers of glazing in this project. We used two so as to create a layered look.
This produced shadows behind the tie, and credentials.

Mounting methods -
Tie - hand sewn thru drilled 1/6 holes
to inner acrylic.
The excess
(the part that would go around the neck)
was pushed thru a 1/2" hole in the acrylic
and carried to the hole in the mats and
backing by a plastic tube (a tube from my
fax machine thermal tissue) covered with
navy linen. The rest was folded and laid
flat behind a small piece of tyvek on the
back of the foamboard backing.
Photos and book cover - a combination of
wet and dry mounting on to Foam board
Credentials and photo of team - mounted to the inner acrylic with brass screws thru drilled 3/32" holes.
Foam basketball halves- attached with
1 5/8" screws from the back.

This project was magic for us as
framers too! It was the first time
we ever framed a tie or used the
2 layer glazing technique.
It is projects like this that keep us
learning and developing new framing
skills, and yet another reason we
appreciate our clients as much
as we do!
Check this spot next month for another great frame!
