Dana Frostick presents “Pattern Recognition” at The Gallery @ Frame Nation
Richmond, VA— The Gallery @ Frame Nation is pleased to showcase the abstract work of Richmond artist, Dana Frostick from July 9 through August 14, 2010. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Friday, July 9, 2010, from 5-9pm. The event is Free and Open to the Public.
Frostick’s exhibition, “Pattern Recognition” will feature drawings and paintings, including new pieces finished this year. The drawings and paintings presented in "Pattern Recognition" have their origins in the chaos and motion found in the artist's subconscious. Frostick allows the lines to flow through her until they are realized into forms and spaces. Once they are "locked in" to this realm, she then sets about to define the regions with various patterns to enhance and coax along themes that begin to present themselves to her. The paintings suggest their titles to Frostick based on what she sees in the finalized pieces. The artist hopes that the viewer can see what she sees, but fully expects each to bring their own existence and subconscious to the viewing, influencing how they themselves interpret the work.
Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Frostick has always focused her life around creating artwork. She and her twin sister Donna studied artwork intensively from pre-elementary through high school, pushing each other to excel beyond the other’s achievements. Both fixated on painting as a primary medium in their teens. While attending VCU in the early-mid ‘80’s, Dana focused on sculpture in order to expand her knowledge of the 3rd dimension, but remained dedicated to painting throughout.
Frostick enjoyed a lengthy career at Richmond Newspapers from 1982-1998, in pre-press design and then in online publishing. It was here that Frostick met her 2nd husband, Richard Cornwell, who encouraged her to pursue her art on a full-time basis. Since then, she has exhibited her work in solo and group shows in Richmond, around Virginia, and in venues located in New York, Omaha, and Washington, D.C. Since 2000, Frostick has been a member of artspace, a non-profit gallery for visual and performing arts, located in Richmond. She served as the gallery’s president from 2004-2005 and has been the webmaster for their website, www.artspacegallery.org, since 2000.
Beyond painting and drawing, Frostick enjoys bicycling around the city, taking care of her cats and traveling. For a complete resume and more information, please visit her website: www.danafrostick.com

The Shockoe areas in downtown Richmond have seen huge cultural expansion and continued growth in cultural sustainability over the last few years. There's a new group in town that hopes to marry those two ideals and promote further growth in cultural sustainability while also breaking down the boundaries that now separate the Bottom and the Slip. Shockoe Wide Open aims to break the mold that divides the Shockoe areas and celebrate the visual and culinary arts of this vibrant area. Starting with a series of 'second Friday' events this new art walk is a collaboration between Frame Nation, The Urban Farmhouse, The Whitley Gallery, The 17th Street Market, and the To the Bottom and Back Bus. PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate release CHAD ANDREWS: A Quick Visit to Anytowne, U.S.A. EXHIBITION DATES: February 5 – March 20, 2010
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, February 5, 5-9 pm Donaghe Contemporary Art, in collaboration with Frame Nation, is pleased to present Chad Andrews' “A Quick Visit to Anytowne, U.S.A.” his debut solo exhibition in Richmond, VA.
The works in the exhibition explore Andrews' fascination with contrasts and commonality. The hectic and repetitive aspects of our daily lives balanced by the beauty and harmony of the moments in between and all around. The work is constructed by the balancing of two opposing sides. The “Western” half of the image is layered with highly representational drawings on Andrews' daily calendar pages and tracing paper as a kind of daily diary. Andrews says of the work, “We are bombarded with imagery every second, and I want to compact the entire day of imagery into a still image." These images of flowers, children, the Golden Arches of McDonald's, traffic lights and strip malls are taken from everyday life in “Anytowne” America and from Andrews' personal life. The opposite side of the piece, the “Eastern” side, is painted with free and spontaneous abstract marks of the brush that reveal space and evoke a sense of tranquility and breath. It suggests all of the quiet moments needed to see and experience the beauty in the chaos of daily life.
Andrews received his BFA from Kutztown University and his MFA in printmaking from the University of Pennsylvania. He was recently featured in a solo exhibition at the College of William and Mary and has been exhibited extensively along the East Coast and in Michigan. His work is held in many national private and public collections. He works and lives in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. An opening reception will be held at Frame Nation in conjunction with First Fridays, Friday, February 5 from 5-9 pm. “A Quick Visit to Anytowne, U.S.A.” will be on view continuing through March 27, 2010. Picture the possibilities: October is National Art & Framing Month
with a variety of special events and programs designed to promote the enjoyment of art as part of daily life.
Frame Nation of Richmond’s river district will also be joining in the nationwide celebration with a giveaway,
in-store specials, and month long donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Founded in 1997, National Art & Framing Month is an opportunity to “Picture the Possibilities” that art and
framing can bring to homes, offices, and public spaces.
The National Art & Framing Month Council helps frame shops and galleries develop programs and marketing
plans to bring awareness to the value of art and custom framing, especially during the month of October.
Vivian C. Kistler, director of the Council, believes that individual businesses can play a key role in generating
interest in the arts. “For the past few decades, budget cuts have forced schools to reduce or even eliminate
art programs. It is now more important than ever for frame shops and art galleries to help the public
understand and enjoy art.”
Art has been an important part of human society since the earliest scrawlings on cave walls, and picture framing
preserves and displays artwork to hang on the walls of homes, offices, and public spaces. National Art & Framing
Month shines a spotlight on this essential aspect of our culture.
In addition to the month long events, Frame Nation will be donating a portion of October‘s custom framing sales
to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The NMSS is a favorite charity among many, for the company.
This is so since Frame Nation founder, Mary Fender‘s, significant other has been suffering from the disabling
disease since 1997 and has been completely disabled since 2004. It is Fender’s hope that this month of
donation will become an annual event, resulting in ever increasing funds going to the NMSS.
October 2008 will also mark Frame Nation’s first year anniversary of operation in Richmond’s historic river district.
The fact the anniversary falls with National Art and framing month is a happy coincidence. Founded by Mary E.
Fender MCPF, GCF, Frame Nation will celebrating with month long in-store specials and a celebration near the
end of October, as the grand opening was on the 25th of October of 2007. The first anniversary celebration will be
the evening of October 24th and coincide with Manchester’s Fourth Friday’s events. The night also marks the fifth
anniversary of Art Works and the 10th Anniversary 1212 Gallery, both of Manchester and will celebrating in their
own artsy style.
